A little humor for the tired soul

DH emailed a little poem(below), together with this cute comic. Feeling a little tired & out of sorts lately albeit still working. A little sick & tired of everything actually. So much to do and so little time. Hopefully the "downbeat" bug will go away soon. Maybe I need to get away for a while....

Yellow, Green & Blue

One of my favourite new color addictions! They just look so happy together! And methinks its a beautiful bridge between the seasons. Its gonna be autumn soon and there'll be loads of orange then. But before that, the greens, blues & yellows! These colors remind me so much of lush green meadows, endless aqua sea pools and fields of sunflowers!

Blue Flower Turtles, Retro Aqua Mushie & Miffy Town Cube Wallets are available in store right now at sale prices! :+)

DIY Tuesday: Polkadots Babydoll Top

Made a new top! Actually I made it last week and had already worn it twice & had gone thru the vigorous washing machine process. hehe Thought I'll save this for a slow blogging day. ;+) I really was in need of something new for my blah wardrobe as mentioned. I hardly get to shop for clothing these days, not to mention the mass-production quality leaves me nauseous. Ugh. Anyhoo, I had this super cute classic polkadots fabric hanging around for a while, actually planned for a cute bubble-hem dress but thought I'll try a top first, besides, I needed it right away! Instant gratification can be pretty satisfying sometimes! And how easy was this top & pretty cute on too! If you got a tee, some fabric, a sewing machine & some 1/8" elastic, you're good to go. Instructions below!

1) First, take a well-fitted tee, draw a straight chalk line across the bottom very near to the seam, cut off the bottom band, and measure about 7inches up, draw another line across. Make sure this band fits your bust line and its not too loose.

2) Cut the band out and fold over & iron about 1/2 inch on the top to form the top hem ready for the elastic.

3)Take your 1/8" elastic, go around yourself above your bust, make sure it fits snug, add an inch & cut. Sew the elastic together with an zigzag stitch.

4) Sew the elastic around the top hem you made on the t-shirt band earlier. To do that, watch this episode of Threadbanger. You'll need to pin the joined elastic portion to the back of the top hem, the other side to the other half. Stretch and sew along the elastic with a zigzag stitch.

5) Take out your fabric for the bottom portion. Depending on how wide/comfy you wish the bottom to flare out, you'll need to adjust. A good way to measure is your hip measurement, adding 10-20 inches in order to have that babydoll effect. My polkadot fabric is pure cotton which doesn't stretch so I added a couple more inches for luck. If you're using another tee, and prefer your bottom not to flare out too much, add about 5 inches to your hip measurement. The length depends on your favourite top/preference. Don't worry if its too short/long. If its too short, you can always add lace! If its too long, simply cut, leaving enough room for a bottom hem. I left 3 inches for the bottom hem since it adds a bit of weight and boxy style. :+)

6) Fold your fabric in half and sew down one side, iron open the seam. If you're super neat, you can fold both seams and sew down both sides to secure it. I simply cut both sides with pinking shears and they've been good.

7) Put the top Tee band into the bottom piece, right sides together, back seam to back seam. If you're skillful, add in the elastic (measured to your underbust comfort level) and sew them all up together. If not start with the top & bottom then add in the elastic, like the top hem of the top. If you notice, I did the bottom elastic looser than the top since I look better without the scrunched up fabric at my underbust, revealing a huge potbelly when I sit down! Its a bit more forgiving when the underbust elastic has a bit more give. ;+) Stretch and sew with a zigzag stitch and you're almost done.

8) Fold in and hem the bottom. I just went over it with a straight stitch.

9) If you like to wear it as a tube top, you can stop here! There's so many options here! I simply took out the leftover tee, measured about 6 inches and made 2 bands, pinned it on to the top elastic, stretched and sewed across with a zigzag stitch. The stretching gives it the slight ruched cuteness & it holds better when on the elastic. Of course, you'll need to wear the top and measure if the straps would fit you before sewing. If you prefer a halter, simply cut 2 long strips and sew to 2 front ends. Alternatively, use ribbon, rope, whatever you like it to be! ;+)

And you're done! Apologies for the word-only tute. Didn't expect to be writing a tute but thought you guys might wanna know the how-to. I promise when I do up my next maxi dress in the same style (soon!), I'll post the step-by-step tute with pics. Its in quite a similar style as the amazing Tee dress on Threadbanger so do hop on over if you need to!

EDIT: Tutorial!

Super easy Banana Nutella Muffins!

Banana Nutella Muffins! Boy the name's a mouthful but it was so unexpectedly yummy, it was gone in no time! Those slightly overripe bananas were literally calling out to me on saturday night. And I had to try out Sandra's recommendation of using nutella in muffins! Besides, I had bought those really cute ruffle muffin cups from Daiso earlier. ;+) Sunday's the best day for baking! yaay! Resipe below! You HAVE to make some. For real.

Ingredients for about 30 small muffins (sorry about the metric system!)
200g flour
150g butter (Golden Churn gold foil butter makes the most fragrant goodies!)
125g sugar
half a glass of milk
3 slightly overripe banana
2 tablespoon nutella
oven, muffin cases, muffin tin

Get out your ingredients. Pre-heat the oven at 190degC. We used the creaming method - 100g flour to 75g caster sugar, 75g butter. We doubled that proportion for about 30 small muffins. Note that if you're using sweet ingredients for later, eg banana, nutella, kinda stuff, its good to skip about 1/2 to 1 tablespoon (25g) of sugar or it'll get way too sweet.

If you have a electric mixer, use it. We're going old-school - creaming the butter & sugar with a wood spoon. Its pretty tiring, but kinda worth it since I can control the process. Room temperature butter does the best job. Using the wood spoon, roughly cut up the butter into manageable pieces then mix & beat til the mixture becomes smooth, white and rather fluffy.

Kinda like so, but I recommend beating it for a little longer as it'll curdle later if it wasn't well beaten at this point. Then add one egg to every 100/75/75 proportion. Beat the egg seperately and add it in a little by little while beating at the same time. If your mixture separates into individuals (curdle!), you'll need to increase the beating for the mixtures in order for the mixture to return to the creamy state. Add a little bit of milk thereafter.

Then add in your fun ingredients! We added about 3 lightly mashed bananas, 2 tablespoon of nutella (Mmmm!) and continued to beat til everything's nice and combined. Now, fold in the flour at the rate of about 2 tablespoons at a go. Don't beat at this point, fold means lightly mix in the flour til well combined each time. If the mixture gets a little dry, add in a little bit of milk. Eventually I did use quite a bit of milk, perhaps til about half a glass for the mixture to have a soft-dropping consistency from the spoon.

Get out the muffin cases & tin, spoon in about 2/3 full, pop in the pre-heated oven (190degC) for about 25mins or til the wood skewer (or fork) prick comes out clean.

Enjoy those yummy muffins before they're gone! :D

Sneak Peek - The Hobo Messenger

Ooooh! Finally! I REALLY had wanted so long to make a huggable hobo-esque messenger type with a flappy thingamajig. It was tough to actually word it out! LOL Its usually a straight U-hobo or a structured messenger, but being the comfort/control-freak that I am, I wanted BOTH in a bag, plus size, function, cuteness, thick straps, etc. etc. LOL Yeap, pushing boundaries is FUN! yaaaay!

After researching & pondering & prototyping for ever so long and looking at ever so many inspirations from clothes, environment, vintage-goodness, I finally came up with this (above!) in one afternoon, despite the heat & stress. Its funny but sometimes, the stress really does bring out the best in me. When the inspiration coaster comes, I throw everything aside and jump in, no second thoughts! Its really the final prototype hence the sneak peek release in the shoppe, at 20% off no less! Everyone around here is sighing in content to see how adorable & functional this new guy is! Mom thinks its way better than my previous prototypes, friend wants it as her new diaper bag, assistant wants one as a school/work bag. Mission (kinda) accomplished. :D

We're gonna fine-tune the design further - flap strength, the gusset size, & to include a pocket on the inside & outside as well for more stuff. They will be a possibility of making them REVERSIBLE! 2 in one baby! That means no wimpy, hassling snaps & stuff coz its suppose to be the easiest-to-use hobo around, not to mention its deep enough not to allow your stuff to fall out. Thanks so much to you guys who have been emailing us about the new Hobo Messenger! Here's the big news...

Official release of the New Hobo Messengers - September 2009. They will be at $62, similar to our usual totes & reversible panel hobos, which are on request-basis right now. Want to custom one? There's no extra charges for custom! ;+)

6 more Maxi Clutches a comin'!

We finished them earlier this week and will be releasing them in about 12 hours. ;+) We had quite a number of requests for more grown-up prints, since these clutches are more of a city/sexy/chic kinda design, so we thought, cutesy aside, we wanna be sexy too! :P

Loads of greens, pinks & blues in thick canvas prints, this makes for one hot, summery & kinda sexy collection, perfect for lunch with the girls by the pool in your maxi dresses.

a better thursday... indulge!

Did you notice food always makes us feel better? Not that its always a good thing though. I think its my low metabolic rate that allows me to gain 5 pounds after a square of chocolate. Its nuts I tell ya. I work like a horse, lose a bit of weight and it ALL comes back after I cave into a trip to haagen daz (Thanks CT! LOL). But hey, we only live once and I believe we should live it to the fullest! Seriously, being overweight is one of my least concerns as long as I can find clothes to fit me, or at least make some to! Even though its one of the lowest priority, I can still run really fast to chase a bus, or away from a robber/rapist/weirdo. So, judging someone's weight rather than ability is shallow. You heard it here first. I say that coz I know young, thin, pretty girls who cannot run to save her own life. So people, take care of your health, run, swim, play tennis, eat fruits. Bu don't forget the chocolates & ice-cream too. As CT says, small amounts in moderation cannot hurt us, instead will bring us joy! ;+)

So if you're feeling crummy that the week seems to last forever, indulge in a piece of chocolate, eat a sundae or buy a cute new dress. You will feel better! :D

Pondering Tuesdays: DIY dresses

After my bout of lethargy, I figure the only thing is to get a new dress to lift the mood! Figuratively, that is, coz I prefer to make mine, preferably from thrifted or old materials. I do have a couple of dresses by yours truly since I love them so much. They're perfect to swish around in, especially in summer when ironically, with all that fabric (light ones!), the air passes thru more easily, hence the coolness. :D I'm gonna need more, I thought to myself, and since the research on DIY dresses came up, I thought I'll share the tutorial links too + some inspiration around the web! ;+)

1) Threadbanger. I watch them ever since they came into existence and I must say they never fail to feed my obsession with making stuff and keeping the enviro eco-friendly. Loads of T-shirt recons lately, Tee-Dress, the $10 Wedding dress, Shirred summer dress, and the dress from mens slacks.

2) The recent Cute summer dress from mens dress shirt from Chic Steals. Loving the ruffly top. Besides, dad just gave me an old button down.

3) Dornob is offering some really helpful inspirational pics of upcycling old clothes, including dresses!

4) Style Bubble made an amazing blue dress with vintage-y elements which I really love! The pleated sleeves are an amazing idea!

5) A really adorable Shirt Dress by made! Ok, this one's a girl's dress but I'm seriously tempted to try an adult version, perhaps with an empire waist. ;+)

6) clevergirl upcycled a lemon mens dress shirt into a cute short sleeved simple dress. Tutorial is pretty clear in pictures!

7) A really cute Babydoll dress by kiss_liss!

8) More inspiration from College Fashion.

9) A current fav - The Chloé Floor-length mousseline silk dress! I'm loving the light as air fabric and the understatedly sexy back. Mmmm.

Now on to dreaming of my next project.... ;+)

Need a hug monday

I need a hug. Looks like its gonna be a long week. A deadline is approaching. Have to send in an assignment for school this weekend and we had to sit around for 4 hours this evening but its still kinda half done. I'm beat and so are my mates but I'm pushing myself so much to finish the darn thing, I'm surprising myself! Then I thought back about some people saying that I'm a superman. Am I really one? I thought about it on the long way back home. Campus is on the other side of town which can be rather trying to commute to frequently. Well I do have a case of perfectionism, or rather being anal about having to finish something I start or I won't look at it anymore. Its kinda got a time limit, or shelf life, this attention span of mine. And this weird need to make a super long to-do list which I never get to finish and will feel awful at the end of the day. This includes updating the blog too!

Reviewing my typical day...I do multitask a lot apparently. Making breakfast, dealing with online admin, snapping pictures, uploading/editing them, packing can all happen at the same time. It might have something to do with ADD too. But hey, it gets a lot of things done! Plus after breakfast, I study, do assignment, laundry & cutting up stuff to make. Oh and I put in music/movie/TV re-run at the same time. By evening I'm beat from having to deal with everything plus the horrible tropical heat, I catch a quick shut-eye for 20mins before dinner comes home. Then its postal run, and back to make stuff, shower, talk to DH over the phone & more online admin(listing, emails, convos, blog, flickr, etc), more packing, research for DIY/eco concerns/fabric/cameras/whatever else before getting shut eye for the day. Suffice to say, I hardly get to sit around for a minute, except travelling or during uni lecture.

I think the measure of lethargy is how much one misses the bed. LOL

-----
p/s: Helped a girl with seriously bandaged ankles up the entrace steps at campus today. The poor girl was walking so slowly and painfully yet so determined to continue school! She was so thankful and I felt better being of at least some help to her. But seriously, where the hell is the disabled access ramp at SIM!? Tsk tsk.

Maxi Clutches - comin' Monday!

Got quite a few emails asking about these new babies and We're revealing them now! Sorry about being so sneaky and all, it actually wasn't that way. We were really busy with restocking and sending out orders this week, we were swamped! By the way, another huge thanks to everyone who came, saw and bought stuff from florspace! :D

Our very classic, vintage-inspired maxi clutches are about 10.5" zippered top so your stuff are completely secure! 7.5" height in order to store all your goodies, and about 14" at the widest bottom! A magnetic snap keeps everything safe and pretty! No pockets inside coz well, its not ginormous and it looks cuter having to dig for stuff. Trust me. hehe Flap is double stitched on both layers, in & out, so its all greatly secure! We supported use of softer materials with canvas back and canvas for the inside so they maintain sturdier construction. They will retail at $42 at this time and only on etsy! ;+)

Do come back and check them out @the little shoppe on monday, hopefully they're still around! If not, a little patience for our restocks. ;+)

Friday Finds: White

I personally *heart* white a lot! Hence the selections for this Friday. :+) Its the most basic color as all the primary colors come together to make white. Its also the most beautiful in my humble opinion. I would love to wear white all the time if not for the fact that I'm such a klutz - spill accidents & black patches on my tush isn't uncommon. My room is painted in white, with specks of black furnishings.

Couple of my favourite things from the amazing etsy!

1) hollow book pistol safe by pommesfrites
I SO need one of these. Its been one of my fantasies to keep cash and other treasures hidden away in a non-descript book on the shelf. Hello old-world!

2) Sexy Boyfriend Sheer Buttonup Top by lamixx
Something perfect to lounge around in on those hot days, with a big bowl of sorbet and a fluffy cat. :D

3) Spiderling Cloud (02) / 8 x 10 print by cloudery
Now this piece of art, is fine! I have a soft sopt for letterpress because of the texture. Plus, you get to do some charity grabbing this beauty.

4) Cathrine Holm blue lotus frying pan by beggarsandchoosers
Ahhh, good old Cathrine Holm. How long have I been a fan of thee!

5) Vintage Milk Glass Creamer and Sugar Set by jwhite2
Recently I'm hooked on smooth-down-the-throat Milk Glass. Understatedly beautiful and varied in texture, this speaks volumes without the loudness of bold colors.

6) Vintage Samsonite Silhouette Ivory 2 Piece Luggage Set by VintageEyeFashion
Luggages never misses my eye! I'm an avid fan and this set is one of the most beautiful I've set eyes on! SO perfect for that trip down memory lane...

7) spell supercalifragilistiexpialidocious by twoangelsinparis
These are game tiles but I'm attracted to the simplicity and possibilities of these amazing tiles! Fix a magnet behind and its a fridge magnet! They are like old wood letter blocks.

8) White Vintage Rotary Phone by FishboneDeco
Did you call your mom today? Old-timey phones have such a great ring to it! Plus the rotary device is so much fun to dial!

9) 1960's Mod Royal Signet Typewriter by OldWorldOrder
I've always wanted one! My mom used to type on this old robin's egg blue typewriter when I was a kid and it reminds me so much of the afternoons I watched her hitting away at the keys. When I got to try it, I was so amused and entertained by having to hit the keys to make words! Its time to return back to old school again! yaaay!

Tuesday Humor - No-frills airline

With all the horrible airplane mishaps recently making us nervous about airtravel, it might be time for a bit of humor to lift the mood. I say its time for airlines to shape up and for us to pick a more trusty company. LOL

A no-frills airline
You'll Know It's a No-Frills Airline If:

1. They don't sell tickets, they sell chances.

2. All the insurance machines in the terminal are sold out.

3. Before the flight, the passengers get together and elect a pilot.

4. If you kiss the wing for luck before boarding, it kisses you back.

5. You cannot board the plane unless you have the exact change.

6. Before you took off, the stewardess tells you to fasten your Velcro.

7. The Captain asks all the passengers to chip in a little for gas.

8. When they pull the steps away, the plane starts rocking.

9. The Captain yells at the ground crew to get the cows off the runway.

10. You ask the Captain how often their planes crash and he sez, "Just once."

11. No movie. Don't need one.

12. Your life keeps flashing before your eyes.

13. You see a man with a gun, but he's demanding to be let off the plane.

14. All the planes have both a bathroom and a chapel.

Giving thanks + shhhh...news!

Whew! Its been a long day! Had to stay up last night, amend all the 155 listings in the shoppe for the sale, answer convos, tweet and prepare more stuff for you wonderful people who stayed patiently by the screen and waited (past midnight for the eastern hemisphere!). To all you early birdies, THANK YOU + HUGS! Its very cliche, but seriously, we'll be living on the streets without you! Its well and truly such a wonderful feeling to be appreciated for the things we do! You early birdies will definitely find extra goodies with your order! ;+) yaaay! Not to worry "later-comers" (*giggles*), our orders always come with love and thanks, just because you believed in us! It makes everything worth its weight in gold.

Now, you might already know this, but I'm quite a juvenile and almost naive person. I have issues keep secrets and holding things in! LOL The shot up there is a final version of our Maxi Clutches soon to be in store! You saw it here first! I just had to say it coz its almost the only thing on my mind these days! I'm a little nuts about clutches. I have a plethora of vintage ones that are being used almost daily as well as prototypes for florspace. With fabric construction constraints, I found in order to create a large clutch enough for our daily (load of!) essentials to be crammed into a hand-held, it needed both to be sturdy, yet relatively lightweight and somewhat structured yet will be suitable to be made in cottons and canvases. I hated super hardy clutches like the old hand-tooled leather ones coz they can hurt as well as clutches that eventually turn lumpy after sometime of usage. Pleats and whatnots tend to trap dirt in the yummy fabric and it can become difficult to handle in everyday situations. I'd wanted something classic, something simple, in the florspace spirit of real functionality and letting the fabric speak for itself.....hence a sort of blown up version of our small clutches we used to do. I loved the classic circular moon shaped flap and trapezoid style. The flat bottom means your clutch will mould to your essentials and habits and you can control how much to put in, not to mention things will be more easily found as they can only be on one plane! And, it packs so easily in your suitcase for travel! And of course, the zippered top means nothing falls out even if you drop the clutch or have to fend off unwanted attention. ;+)

Quite a bit of thought went in but it'll be boring you guys out! I will not be releasing the one you see at the top, as the fabric is vintage and has a bit of flaw in it. Its mine for keeps! 3 more really adorable ones like above are coming in store, so do keep your eyes peeled if you're a clutch-anatic like moi! :D

Half Market Tote!

I posted the above playshot on flickr yesterday. Were you guys curious to find out what it is? ;+) I know I was! Yeah, its highly likely I'm standing alone as a seriously mental bag lady! LOL Anyways, I gotta admit the tiny retro flowers background is actually my ironing board cover which the elves had gotten a while ago coz they know I'm gonna fawn over the kitschy print! I did and it goes well with the Couleur Envelope Tote, doesn't it? This shot was just begging me to play with it digitally! After some cross processing, vintage-ing & polaroiding the shot, it looks somewhat like the lomo effect...sort of. ;+)

Taa-dah! Its a hafu~(half) Market Tote! Our usual Market Totes are really great in terms of size, but while searching for possibilities of variety (I blame ADHD!), I had to do a cute version of the mom-sized totes! I also loved that despite the tote being soft-sided, its really lightweight and foldable which means, extra storage and burst of color on the go! It tucks neatly into the flat envie tote! I wear a lot of black and commuting in the crowded city, sometimes there's not enough room to even move! This tote guarantees ease of reaching in while on the shoulder especially in a tight jam and a quick stop at the organic market. The pleats on all 4 sides adds 3D-ness to the color-popping effect!

A little florspace happiness everyday! here!

Friday Finds: Camera

After my little excited post on playing with toy cams, you'd guessed I'll do the Friday Finds on old school memory makers! :D I'd been surfing around etsy vintage section for as long as etsy was up. LOL Only in recent months have I discovered that there were vintage cameras in all shapes, sizes, in strangeness and wonder! My earliest memory of a camera is someone sticking his head in a box with a black cloth over his head. We're told to stay frozen in a tiny musty room with a stiff backdrop. Then suddenly, pop, a blinding flash and it was done. I saw stars for a while after that. I didn't like studio shots because I felt it was stiff. There weren't signs of life, so to speak. I loved shots of things in motion. Obviously the cameras I own then did not accomodate the accuracy of speed. Not that I can really afford a DSLR now, but thru Lomo-ing many years back, I've come to relish the slightly dreamy, light-wonky, unexpected pictures of older cameras and toy cameras. Not just cameras per se, talented etsyers are taking the old school memory-makers a couple steps further. Here's are some of my humble finds....

1) CHEESE KATAKANA Graphic Tee Womens

2) Vintage Rollei 35 Camera - Eco Friendly tote Graphic Canvas Tote Bag (Style no. ct278)

3) Vegas Sky - Lomography Fine Art 5 x 5 Photographic Collage Print

4) Photo Finish Bloom - SLR Camera and Film Brooch/Pin

5) Vintage Brownie Starmeter Flash Camera

6) Miniature Vintage Camera

7) Camera Gang. 6 Oldies

8) Kodak Duaflex IV with Flash

9) Vintage 1950's Kodak Metal Film Canister

Mid-week Rant - Attack of the babies

mX news, 21st July 09, Melanie Sullivan (Click on article to read!)

Courtesy of my dear husband, who scanned out this article for me from our favourite free paper, mX in metro Sydney, Australia. By now, you guys might have already known that besides being a commitment-phobe, I'm also allergic to kids. And while the popularity of having a bun in the oven shoots up, the availability of annoyance, strollers blocking the way and wailing kids are on the rise. But as the author mentioned, there's something else of note - Moms using babytalk. I have sensitive ears and using baby talk on adults (even when kids are around) is simply not ok! I'm not sure how the moms feel, but its demeaning and honestly, quite an insult to both mom, kid and everyone else. Yes kids are the way to the future, but thats in your universe, not mine. I will steadfastly not procreate and its my life choice. I celebrate yours, but will you even acknowledge mine? People who hear of my decision see it as a "plight" of ignorance that the world desperately needs kids. They will "pity", chide, and try endlessly to change my opinions thru a series of pseudo-logic that I can tear apart in a sec. But nooooo, they'll never hear of that. The worst attack comes when one has to attend a Baby Shower. This is one of the worst things only your closest friends can inflict on you. I couldn't have put it in a better way than the lovely author, see points 1 & 2 on the right column of the article.

And YES, motherhood is CHOICE to be made, not a rite of passage. Ugh. The last time I was at Westfield Hurstville shopping mall, a mother with a pram wanting to edge herself into the narrow corridor to the restrooms yelled, "PRAM!" to everyone around obviously with the intention to let her in first. Plain and simple, its YOUR CHOICE to have kids. Isn't it a tad rude to implicate and impose on everyone else? I'm always happy to help if someone with kids has problems manouvering the stroller going down the escalator, or picking up the pacifier/toy/towel or to give up my seat on public transport. I happily gave my seat to a family on the plane before so that they could sit together. But in this case, its really just plain rude to yell "pram" at everyone.

In the end, I walked right in before her.
One small step for me, one big realization for childless people everywhere.

Lomo & Superheadz-ing

As excited as a kid on christmas morning, I braved the wind and pouring rain, dragged my school tote to collect my first roll of film from the (new) ColorSplash camera I bought back in April. I used an expired colorslides 400 from Kodak saved from my Fisheye lomo-ing back when I was in Sydney. I love saving rolls of film til they expire! I still have a roll of sepia back from my japan trip back in 2000. LOL I'll use it when I finally get a proper Lc-a or a Horizon from lomo. For once, plastic is sorta fantastic (ugh, i hate myself). And to save at least some plastic, I bought a 35mm conversion adapter for my clunky Holga 120SF. I love how boxy the Holga is, its adorable! I haven't actually used the Holga in 120 yet (Boo!) coz I'm clumsy and a dork when it comes to dealing with 120. :/

Anyhoo, I got the film processed at my cousin's place, still paid the full price though! Didn't ask for paper prints, but the scanning costs more than the processing. Hmm....what gives?! That aside, the minute I saw the burst of colors of the mini icons on the CD insert, I was sort of blown away! Hey, its still my first tryout roll, so cut me some slack! LOL The range of reds, blues & yellows were intense as promised by the slide film. I think I'll need to work on my focus, distance as well as which color flash to use for when. There were 34 shots, but some of them were awful blurred and exposed. The rest of them are available here. I didn't carry the cam out of my place. I was pushing it and really wanted to try the flash indoors. In a way someday when I look back at the shots, it'll be a snapshot of things around my place at this time. :+) Only bad news is that the rubbery surface of my CS X-Pro edition cam has gone bit melty on me. I had to lose the silver skin it came with and clean it up a bit with eucalyptus oil. Not everything's out yet, but its better with tiny bits of tissue "fur". Its like winter. LOL For peeps who have the shiny plastic Colorsplash, count yourself lucky!

Ahh....the mysteries of lomo-ing. When everyone is snapping themselves silly using digital cams, I relish in the dreamy, wacky colors the toy plastic cameras can provide! Yes, I am quite old-school in everyway (almost!). I'm also in the midst of trying out a fuyuneko edition of a Superheadz micro cam that uses 110 film. A very nice friend brought it back from Japan a while back and I really had no idea what it was initially! But the thought of using such a cool looking shape of film in such a tiny camera got me excited about taking pictures with toy cams again! I had put down my Fisheyes (1&2) when I came back from Sydney couple of years ago. Its surprisingly more expensive to process film in Singapore than in Sydney, especially to scan them. Anyways, I'm besotted with Superheadz Demekin (Fisheye 110!) which comes adorably packaged in a fishbowl blister pack! Oh & the tiny book camera! Perfect for spying (in a good way, that is)! LOL And it's made to look like a real vintage book, with a sleeve and all! Oh I'm in way over my head about new films right now! Only problem is my cousin's place won't process 110. And not to mention those photo shops in the 'burbs won't even touch a C-41 slide film. Tsk. The worst thing is 35mm film is rarer than rare in the major shopping places now! *_____*

Next to come, a B&W roll of Fisheye2 & hopefully someone will process the 110 roll from my Superheadz Fuyuneko. woo-hoo for film!

ps: its embarassing but I gotta admit I dreamt about buying the Demekin while shopping in Tokyo. Kiddy & nerd! :D Kinda wished it was for real though. LOL

Friday Finds: Mustard

This opens a new segment in this little blog world, Friday Finds! There are plenty, plenty of amazing vintage things picked by discerning etsyians, not to mention amazing crafters on etsy.com so instead of posting at randon or trying for the elusive etsy Treasury, I'm gonna try the Friday thing. Hopefully I'll be keeping it up duitfully! :P

This friday, I'm obsessed with Mustard Yellow! Ain't this the cheery sunshine color that always get forgotten in the blacks of metropolitain city? It reminds me so much of meadows and holidays in the country where time just crawl by while we just sit on haystacks watching the clouds go by..... Let's explore a little of this yummy summery color!

1) Rotary Telephone from VintageEye
I have one in blue and the loud yet classic rings always brings me back to yesteryears!

2) Leather Heels from 19vintageclothing
I'm loving this loads! I have a pair of vintage pumps in red but this is really egging me on to buy it! Will look amazing with dark navy denims.

3) American Tourister Suitcase from ResourceClothing
Ahh, the classic AT suitcases never fail to make my heart skip a beat. I own several but not in mustard yet. This color is getting rather besotting!

4) American Tourister Carry-On from SuzisCornerBoutique
Oooh! Another one of those Carry-Ons I gotta add to my collection eventually. Matches the Suitcase perfectly!

5) Colemans Mustard Spice Tin from AntiNu
Whats a list of mustards without the mustard? LOL Love vintage tins, they are the easiest way to add a bit of vintage-y touch to your casa without breaking the bank or putting in a nail. Sweet.

6) Mikasa stoneware plate from Kultur
Printed with simple tulips reliefs, these dinner roundies are not just for food! Carefully hung on the wall, they brighten up your kitchen or dining area! Just be sure to use strong plate holders to prevent crash mishaps!

7) The suit from lovethyvintage
This depicts the 60s so perfectly! Just add a hat with some netting and proper pumps and you're ready for lunch or the afternoon derby! The ladies will be so jealous!

8) Plastic Juice Pitcher from halfcaf
No retro kitchen should be without one of these! So bright, it'll pop on your kitchen counter! Mom has a muted latte plastic melmac pitcher, right out of the 70s, in our kitchen! I never appreciated it when I was younger, but I'd never give it up for the world now! Yaaay for vintage & moms!

9) Canister set from sassboxclassics
Last but not least, home retro-ness desperately needs these babies to be on the kitchen counter! Not just for its cute looks, they store biscuits, tea, and other foodie knick knacks in such mod beauty! Note the wooden knobs! woo-hoo!

Go mustard! :D

of Men

Boy does time flies! Its funny how we keep saying that but it really only goes faster, doesn't it? I do relish the simple days where we have less to deal with. A simple pot of tea like the one I've just put on and a little quiet idyllic afternoon with a good book is all I crave for these days. I've been back in Singapore for 24 days now but it really seem like yesterday that I'd just left Sydney. I do miss the weather especially now that the heat here has become awfully oppressive at 91degF and above, not to mention is far more crowded in Singapore than in Sydney. Nonetheless, its nice to be back sewing up a storm for the shoppe. :+)

A couple of thoughts ran thru my head the other day and thought I'd share. From my end of the thinking stick, seems like guys have it harder going for them these days. The women empowerment movement has been going for eons now and it seems that women have no issue speaking their mind, being overly sensitive & analytical about relationships with people (not just love), and patting themselves on their backs, calling that emotional support. Don't get me wrong, I'm a girl too and yes, I do face issues everyone else does. And I emphasize "everyone". It seems that guys do face issues with people & feel too but apparently, instead of analyzing the situation/experience to bits, judging and talking it to death with their BFFs, they simply brush it off or keep it to themselves. They do see things in a different way. Its really from a different angle and yes, they do have considerate feelings! Over the years of being with my other half has thought me a lot of lessons. We talk, a lot, about everything and while we might not always see things from each other's eyeballs, we try to empathize. And that word doesn't mean "emotional support", it really means taking yourself out of context and trying to feel what the other person feels. Its a strange practice and for a long time, I couldn't do that myself. Its difficult when one's entire brain is covered in the colored goo of one's own thoughts and opinions, we forget that the other person matters too, even when we want them to listen to us. And the fact that guys find it difficult to express their thoughts clear enough for the women to understand, makes it all the reason for us to drift apart. We all have work, life, issues and so forth and sometimes its darn difficult to speak to someone when they don't listen. We look for our girlfriends to lament, to empathize and for pats on the back, but we forget that at the end of yet another long day, the men need that kind of support too! They may not ask for it, may not complain that we're not spending enough time & attention on them like our BFFs do, but trust me, they need a hug every now and then, to say that you still care and you're still there for them. Something I said to my other half before I moved back to Singapore a while back stuck with him, "No matter what happens, I'll always love you". Sure enough, I'd already forgotten about it but he reminded me and told me it mattered and it kept him alive. I was touched in a long long time.

It sounds so Stepford Wives, but its true that if we women are not lavishing attention on our other halves, or even your good friends, they will look elsewhere for the attention (but may not always end up negative). I'm pretty sure we'll feel the same if we're being ignored. Its a lovely reminder of assurance. Men do not think about sex all the time. That is pretty true from hundred of articles of men myths on the net. Its really the media that sensationalize that. We all have roving eyes, not just the men! Perhaps its the extended period of time me & my other half spend apart that we end up cherishing the time we have much more. The distance does have some occasional annoying consequences but nothing to raise hell about. I do remember a time where we spent everyday together during uni days yet still drift apart because we took each other for granted that the other person will always be there anyways so we don't have to be nice to each other. Its so easy to slip into that really. So, eventually, its not the geographical distance that keeps people apart, its really the effort to spend time together doing stuff, listening & experiencing that really helps keep people together.

Instead of taking the easy way out & slipping back into a hermit life, why not give the men in your life a hug today?

Thanks Katy!

Just wanna take a moment to say thanks SO much to Katy of imagingermonkey for sending me this basket of wonderful goodies! I won her giveaway last month and this basket arrived in the mail last week. It was such a mood uplifter since I had to leave DH behind in Sydney at the end of last month. Had so much fun finding out whats inside! Suffice to say, its so enjoyable that the pack of skittles is gone, the super cute polkadot notebook is becoming a staple in my tote, the pin cushion and basket is on my sewing table getting plenty of workout, the handy & pretty cut fabric squares planned for a quilt, the seeds have been planted (fingers crossed that they'll sprout!).....Katy's an amazing gift-giver and I'm just so honored to be the winner! Its cliche to say but its true that I hardly ever win anything in my life. LOL

To pass on the love, we're having a giveaway of our own soon! ;+) Stay tuned!

Fawn of Mushrooms

By now, you guys'll prolly know my fondness for mushrooms. I love them to bits, eat them, stare at them, make them, play with them... It is only a matter of time before they mushroom out into totes again. One of my fondest memories of my first mushroom totes were of this one. How happy was I to find that fabric! Even today as I unearth another out-of-this-world-cute mushroom print is sure to make me grin and squeal! This print is particularly special as it incorporates another fav character - the fawn, aka deer, aka doe...etc. I loved Deery Lou when Sanrio came up with it eons back. It evokes memories of beautiful secret woodlands, or the garden of Eden, with apple trees & honey bees, elves and pixies having a cuppa on stumps. Oh yes, I should prolly mention that I grew up with fairy tales, Alice in Wonderland & Enid Blyton. :+)

Pair this etereally adorable print with a slightly more unexpected polkadotted sky blue (usually it'll be red!) as I was really thinking of well, the powder blue skies with puffy clouds in that secret garden! All thats left is a rainbow and maybe a cute leprechaun before its pure magic!

Let's have tea in the secret garden here! ;+)

The Rilakkuma Trio!

If I had a character addiction, it might be Rilakkuma. I keep coming back to this adorable yet lazy bear! Yes, Tenorikuma (must be the coffee thing) is pretty close and cute, but this guy, LOL, even DH thinks I laze like Rilakkuma! Remember the first ultimate set back in 07? It was a mod summer yellow version of Rilakkuma! That said, I had to double faint when I saw this print before I left for Sydney. That was back in April, but I can't help reliving the little happiness I felt. Not just Rilakkuma, but a pink version of it! Above all, I pulled out my schedule book for this year and voila, its a perfect match! I knew I didn't have time to dabble with the poor fabric, just begging to be made into something cute for someone nice. It was the day of departure. I rushed it home, kept it nicely together with the rest of my private reserve stash knowing it'll be the first thing I'll go for when I'm back. I did almost, just alsmot forgot about it when I came back but since I was missing DH terribly, I opened my stash and there she was smiling at me. Before long, despite the heat, i managed to do up this trio for some lucky Rilakkuma lovers! We don't have much of this print and apparently its out of print, typical for most fabrics unfortunately. I hate it when good prints becomes unavailable, but well, I guess all we can do is to cherish them!

Anyways, I thought it best to combine this candy-ish pink background with a little chocolate brown. In comes mr. polkadots and miss cottony lace and we have cuteness! The cube is a special edition with the same chocolate polkadots inside too! They just look so yummy together! Best thing? Get all 3 and the 2 purses ships free! Just pay for shipping of the tote!

Look at them here!

I keep walking...

So, I'd worn these boots around for a day and surprisingly, it was pretty enjoyable! Albeit the 33degC, it was apparently wearable and kinda cool too! Just wanted to document the thought in case it goes missing at the back of my head. Dying to make more house shoes coz I wanna stop buying for everyone in my family. Why buy when you can make? And I can make 'em cute! :D

It started pouring toward the evening and while the sun sets, I am reminded of how DH and I would do a little sunset hug to commemerate the little event. He likes rain days, I like to play in the rain! During the very rare events that we got up for the sunrise, we would do the same. I felt a little sad then. I suppose its not been long enough and the seperation anxiety still lingers quite strongly. On Wednesday, as I got up alone and ate alone, it felt strange to be doing all those things I was doing before I went to Sydney, like nothing had happened. Suffice to say, it felt almost like I dreamt the whole thing up and now am back to reality. I often am asked, "how do I keep a distance relationship going?". People look on increduously when I tell them we'd already spent about 4 years apart. Perhaps its the little silly insignificant things we do that keeps us together, perhaps because we squeeze everything out of each other; we're dedicated to what each other does, kinda like being kept in the loop. We almost don't let each other stray and we speak over the phone every night. Obsessive yes, compulsive, maybe a smidge. Well, I guess we do get sick, want to move on, stray, whatever you call it, but hell, we find out new things about each other and sorta get stuck again, in a good way. In the end, I tell people, you both gotta want it badly enough to stay together. Perhaps in time, when it does end one day, I'll look back fondly on the memories because so much of what we had was good.

A little melancholic today. ~___~

updates

hmm....i've been trying to update the blog for a couple of days now since I came back to Singapore but apparently blogger won't allow me to upload pictures. They simply don't appear and after trying on 3 different computers for the billionth time, I gave up. But hey, it doesn't stop me from writing now, does it? :+) The rest of Sydney related pictures are available on flickr now.

Well, I must apologize for my disappearance. Updating the blog was tough during the vacay since DH and me were trying to squeeze "things to do together" all the time. Twitter was the only "micro-blogging" I could afford to do. We see each other only a couple of months a year as he's in Syd and I'm in singapore and he might not be able to make it back this year, what with all the phd review, job search and migration thingies. sigh, but hey, who needs this greenhouse anyways? I'm looking forward to sunbathing at Bondi at the end of the year. Yes, its summer downunder in Dec. I always remember Homer saying "so, its opposite land!" LOL

So, we're back in operation. florspace elves need a bit of easing in but we're definitely working on things to come! Meanwhile, its just a little lull period. Today, I took sometime to finish a project I'd long wanted to, since last year. A pair of home boots! It took the entire afternoon coz I'd mistaken the number of pieces and ended up with just one boot initially! LOL They turned out pretty cute eventually.

Also managed to go shopping and picked up Shinzi Katoh chopsticks rest and a dinner set. Also the very adorable train set. I'm tempted to extend the carriages though I know I shouldn't over-do it. Space here is so limited! Hmm.....I need a warehouse for storage!

But the best news of all has got to be the wonderful basket 'o goodies I won from Katy! I honestly didn't expect to and just wanted to comment on how cute it was! Such a wonderful surprise it was! It does help feel a little better coming back here without DH.

My folks promise to bring me out for Dim Sum tomorrow at Chinatown. I'm missing the fruity prawn springrolls. Hopefully blogger clear up the picture uploading prob.

the lowdown (long)

So, its been about 20 days since I stepped into Sydney. And yes, I have been procrastinating a full-fledged blog post for um, a good 2 weeks now! Things happened, met people, went to markets and learnt to slow down a bit. I have an interesting life. I studied in Sydney for about 4 years earlier so this place is not new to me, even though the inflation rate never fail to shock me yearly. I visit because my other half is here. Nope, he's not white nor aboriginal, he's from SG as I but is currently finishing his phd and pursuing an academic career here. We're both thinkers, thinking too much and talking to death about life during our uni days with our mutual friend over coffee, wine, food was our past time. It was the time of our lives and we still talk about it, miss it. Even though as time runs past, we tend to focus less on those dreamy days and start thinking about mechanical day jobs, insurance and swine flu. I feel as though our existence becomes less visible as our hopes and dreams are shattered by reality. Nonetheless, in some ways, we, or at least I, re-ignite the good old days when I make my yearly trip here. Things start to slow down after I appease my separation anxiety with working like nuts on bags and purses amongst studying and rushing for projects and whatnots. I still miss making stuff. Several things since I got here....

1) DH surprised me the second day I was here, as we walked along Pitt Street. He urged me to go into the Vuitton boutique on Castlereagh Street. I admit I do love Louie bags for their quality and he knew that. I was always a Louie gal, never Gucci, Coach nor Chanel. Funny. He ended up buying a Damier Ebony Neverfull in the GM size for me a couple of days later. It was an anniversary present; we've been together for 12 years now. He said that he should be able to buy me something coz he was drawing a salary. I did used to make him promise he'll finally buy me a Louie when he starts working. Not officially working, but the thought was so sweet and I was obviously over the moon, coz I know it'll last me for 10 years, just like the treasured Pochette mom & Dad bought me when I was 18 holidaying in Europe. Well, the joy didn't last since I found faults in the quality of the bag a couple of days later when I finally deigned to open the big brown box. The piping on the top was uneven, it was puffy on the top not flat when laid down, the interior placement though beautiful in blazing red was crooked in the lining of the fabric across, not to mention the sides weren't aligned. The portion of the handle attaching to the bag wasn't aligned with the squares in the front as well. I was in despair since I did read about some accounts of disappointing quality of the damier neverfulls on the Purse Forum. I didn't expect to be face to face with one. We went back to the store, same SA person, inspected 4 other damier neverfulls and it was the same. The SA said she couldn't find anything wrong with the bags. I had to tell her it was disappointing since Louie bags are supposed to be of unsurpassed quality. Since my other half was paying that much, I didn't want to settle for an ok-quality. In fact, I was more worried of the fact that people might just think its a fake. Eugh. In the end, DH thought I should settle for a classic damier speedy 35. We asked for it, I scrutinized it and asked nicely to see another if possible. She immediately said it was the last one. I thought it looked fine and he requested to have it initialled in gold. The funny thing was that the SA was supposed to call him 3 days later when it was ready for collection but we didn't receive any call. Finally we had to call them back and collected it last Sunday. I'm starting to agree with some folks on TPF that we should deserve better service for the price we pay, not to mention we were quite well-dressed and polite to the people. Anyways, I do love the bag but we probably won't be going back for a while. I think I should make this one last coz its my first official bag from louie. And, oh, I can prolly make myself one if I need a bag. ;+) Who can have enough bags and shoes!? I'm a bag-lady. Yes.

2) I forgot to pack in WL's orders for when I was supposed to pass it to her here! I was in such a mad rush to get out of the house before I left. Horrible that I had to make her wait! I got mom to rush it to me and I finally met her last Sunday morning and she was so nice! She even bought me yummy Macadamia dark choco Haigh's which DH loves too! And a cute milk choco bunny which I pretty much devoured. Yikes. And also a cute green tea candle! She'd also wrote back to say she loved her bags. Phew! Alls well, ends well!

3) Parkour mishaps. DH does Parkour and I was introduced to it a while ago and love the freedom of able limbs. I had a couple of injuries, nothing serious except... I fell on my face last sunday evening into the bushes when I was jumping on the brick ledge downstairs. Blame myself for being half asleep and the weather for being so cold. I got scratched on the left and it was pretty obvious. Not to mention that injuries to the face can be pretty painful! It wasn't deep but hey, its on the face. No going out til my concealer will at least cover it. I'm not going to be called Two-Face in public. Tomorrow's thursday and shops stay open later and DH has been pestering me to go out. I might just because of the reasons below...

4) 2 things always come to mind when I'm here in Sydney. Camper and Crumpler. I got to know them from DH's long-time friend who also became our mutual friend when we first came over to Sydney. I bought my first Crumpler, a red messenger with a laptop case inside from the Campus utility stores. I carried it for a long time, coz it was utilitarian and comfy. Since then, I've added a red camera sling and the 10th anniversary messenger to my collection. Being here again calls up those needs. Pseudo or not, bags are like Krispy Kreme donuts to you guys, non-negotiable! Obviously, my attention was centered on the headaitch in red, in medium, which is promptly sold out when I checked the site. I was gonna settle for the large one but I'm terrified its gonna dwarf me and look like I'm carrying mommy's tote when I'm 5, plus the prospects of the weight of the kitchen sink isn't gonna be good. DH said no, coz I'll make him carry it. Damn straight. LOL I will have to check it out tomorrow. Yaaaaaay! More bag scouting is fun!

5) Then there's Camper shoes. I LOVE them to bits. Bought my first pairs when there were sale here. Loafer low boots in chocolate, Cream pelotas, black mary janes, beige/gray sandals. I miss them all. Most of them were worn to bits, or sold when I was leaving Sydney. I mostly live in Havaianas in Singapore so shoes were out. So now I obviously miss them. I still love the knee length leather boots DH bought for me last year but the comfort of Campers seem to stay stuck in my memory for good. No sale yet in the stores and no interesting designs, so I looked online. I'm a true Camper 39 and when I found this pair, I am seriously thinking of binding my foot. Its SO adorable in the cute lime and straw and I love the mismatch designs of the Twins range! Still percolating coz its expensive with the shipping and all.

6) Spending most of my days cooking and loitering in supermarkets. Hm, I do miss cooking since mom doesn't like me messing up her kitchen! We just had Apricot chicken tonight. Not amazing, but I blame the sauce. LOL Wish DH's place had an oven for cakes and muffins! But thank goodness amazing scones are just downstairs at bakers delight. Yum!

7) Other random things. Discovering amazing coffee at Pattison's at Chase Chatswood. Visiting the MCA. My favourite exhibit, Mirrored Years: Yayoi Kusama is so amazing. If you're in town, go see it. So intense, provocative, yet innocently dreamy and even juvenile. Besides Narcissus's Garden, I loved the mirror rooms and the super large clouds! I swear if there weren't anyone around, I'll jump on one. It felt like night time heaven! We share the same obsession with polkadots and spherical things.

Boy is this long! Til next time and hope you guys are having a great summer/winter!

a journey to sydney...

Couldn't wait to update the blog!

I finally took the A380 to Sydney. I didn't get a proper shot except the one I sneakily took up there, coz well, we're not supposed to snap pictures in the plane. I didn't sleep much, watched 3 movies + a drama (Bride Wars, The Tale of Despereaux, Yes Man, Californication) and had a great time on the plane, for once! No more stinky service and life-threatening landing from Qantas. No offense to Qantas lovers, but I had enough of them. Cheap fares or not, I don't think customers should be yelled at and forgetting my requests for a cup of plain water. The experience with SQ has always been great but the prices always made me think twice. Its just about 7 hours I'd always think so I'll be able to wait it out regardless of how suicidal it made me feel. Cutting to the chase, having been on an SQ A380, I can now tell you the experience is a gazillion times better than bring on stinky Qantas. The service was impeccable, food was yummy, seats were bigger, more egronomic & comfy, more leg room, screens were all working and bigger, movie selections were bigger, headsets were great. I was on the upper deck of the plane, right at the last seat. Taking off and landing was smooth. It was overall a tremendous experience!

I landed here in the morning at 6am, came back to me second home, opened the door and my other half was still sleeping! He got a shock when I stuck a finger up his nostril to wake him coz he didn't budge when I tickled him! hehe But since I hardly got any sleep the night before I kept falling asleep during the day! We went to North Sydney and Crows Nest, came back and made dinner and watched The Simpsons on TV. Didn't make it for Medium and CSI. Went to bed early coz I was dead tired. Today, bright and early, we went to the Rozelle and Balmain markets today and it was a lot of fun! Markets are amazing places with smiley people and very interesting things all lumped into one place! Had gozleme for breakkie and it was so good I can't believe I had hated it before! LOL The weather is amazingly cool and even when it started to rain in the evening when we headed home, it was a refreshing experience to walk in such a light rain. Its always pouring cats and dogs in Singapore. We're gonna go to bondi tomorrow, for the market, beach and mall. Pray I don't meet the ghost again! And hope it doesn't rain and ruin the market thing!
